Boston Design Week 2017

Boston Design Week, a 12-day, city-wide festival, seeks to increase public awareness and appreciation of all aspects of design. Fostering recognition of the vital role design plays in our lives, over 80 events all over the city bring new audiences to a wide array of design industries and organizations. Hosting a variety of inclusive and engaging events, the Innovation and Design Building shares Boston Design Week’s vision of encouraging the public to explore all aspects of design.

Tools for Food: Collaboration at the Table

Tools for Food: Collaboration at the Table

Having dumped traditional linen tablecloths and gladly canceled laundry service 16 years ago in favor of the wipe-clean, minimalist Chilewich mat, restaurants are now ditching antiseptic white china for hand-made ceramics. In fact the country’s top chefs and biggest-name restaurants are collaborating with artisans of all kinds to create truly unique dining experiences.

As part of the “artisanal” experience relationships with local artists as well as local producers grow very organically for chefs, and like a purveyor of fine ingredients, artisans and chefs successfully craft a partnership. They’re speaking to potters and one-of-a-kind knife makers, as well as butchers, farmers, and foragers, to come up with unique things for their vision— unique to their restaurant and unique to their dishes. Together with artists, chefs are putting as much careful thought and consideration into the plates, platters and bowls their food is served on as they do into the food itself. The intent is not compete with the food, but to lift it, and create unique cultural experiences that generate excitement in the dining room.

Designing for Virtual Reality

Designing for Virtual Reality

This hands-on session will merge the worlds of 2D and 3D design into an interactive VR experience. Participants will help design their own virtual environment, learn how these elements are translated for Virtual Reality, and then experience their own creation with GearVR. The workshop session will be followed by a wine and cheese reception, as well as an interactive demonstration of Microsoft’s HoloLens, the HTC Vive, and the Oculus Rift.

Boston Architectural College’s annual Spring Gala brings together our community for an evening reception at the Innovation and Design Building in Boston’s Seaport District. More than 400 guests attend to support BAC and enjoy a silent auction, live music, cocktails, and food tastings from a variety of local and sustainable food and beverage companies. The proceeds from the gala go directly to benefit students and support the College’s mission of diversifying the design professions.

Join us for the much anticipated debut of the interactive compositional public art project, Sound Sculpture. This immersive, flexible interface allows participants to create music, sculpture and light creations through placement of the blocks in space.
